3DOF simply means '3 Degrees Of Freedom', movement in the three dimensions except rotation. VR headsets with 3DOF can detect whether the user has turned their head left or right, tilted it up or down, or pivoted left or right. So, 3DOF, the number of different directions that an object can move in virtual space. VR headsets that have 3DOF can track your head orientation and knows where you are looking. Generally 3DOF is used in the vast majority of standalone, or mobile VR headsets. 6DOF are found on higher quality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift S, Vive Cosmos and Valve Index. They all offer a far greater level of immersion and realism.
